(brought to you by Capt. Bob, and Kona Charters)

Last updated: November 29, 2005

Local fish names:
Ahi (yellow fin tuna); Ono (wahoo); and Mahi-mahi (dolphin fish)

I am asked almost everyday, if we fish for anything other than marlin? Yes, and this pages shows the results of some of those charters.
Also, see the "Month-byMonth" summary of marlins caught that weigh over 600 pounds.

Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii: (Fishing Report as of 05-18-2005),
and the fishing has been GOOD!!
:
SEE photo of a 963 pound marlin caught this week, almost a "grander"...

Weighed Blue Marlin: 485,326,293,389,467,222,225,179.

Tagged and released Blue Marlin: 400,500,500,110,100,175,300,150,150,160,700,140,120,100,175,150,120,150,125, 160,150,200, 100,90,350,90,180,600,200,100,150, 125,100,275,200,600,300,140.

If you average the weights, it comes out to a 222 pound average per fish, and
the summer is not here.
So it looks like we are in for some big fish this year. And, I think it is just great that we are seeing more anglers wanting to release their fish. Remember just tell us we want to release your fish, as these are beautiful animals that can be enjoyed by others.

Tagged and released Spearfish: 31 total, and these fish weigh between 20 and 40 pounds.

The Ahi are still here and for the most part they are still over 100 pounds: 106,136,113,134,115.

Ono, "we have ono", one boat caught 11 fish, weighing up to 34 pounds.

These are the biggest fish so far.

Well that’s it from here, and REMBER BE SAFE OUT THERE
!

Capt Bob

Blue Marlin almost a grander

Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii: (Fishing Report as of 03-12-2005), and the fishing has been GOOD!!:  Weighed Marlin:750,500,806,553,923,720,516,662,477,603,167,303,177,344,398,456. Tagged and released Marlin: 400,750,400,500,400,200,220,300,150,140,700,120,500,80,50,120,250,
300,70,150,125,225,125,100,75,85,95.
We have also tagged 15 spearfish weighing up to 50 pounds. The stripe marlin are here in force we have tagged 29 since the last report weighing up to 150 pounds. And, we are still catching Ahi when we find them weighing up to 175 pounds. SO, until next time...REMEMBER BE SAFE OUT THERE!!!!!! Capt. Bob

Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii: (Fishing Report as of 2-03-2005):

Please notice the 672 pound Pacific Blue Marlin, and the two Ono weighing 67 pounds each in this report. Also, we are catching Stripe marlin, Mahi-Mahi ,ono, spearfish, and ahi daily.

We also released 24 Spearfish weighing around 30-35 pounds, and 17 stripe marlin weighing up to 105 pounds. Weighed marlin: 672,565,597,617,545,523,311,394,361,261,224,263,464,445,332,167. Tagged and released marlin: 150,100,80,90,60,90,100,150,100,90,100. Well that's it from here, and REMEMBER BE SAFE OUT THERE!!! Capt. Bob

Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii: (Fishing Report as of 12-30-2004):

Weighed marlin: 580,504,255,457. Tagged & released marlin: 700,40,60,60,105,110,80,50,70,30,50,35,50,55,60,125,180,75.

Spearfish: 30,30,40,35,40,20,40,30,40,35,35, (and a 54 pounder, see photo ===>>>).

We are catching a few Stripe Marlin weighing up to 100 pounds but most of them around the 35 to 60 pound class,as the spring comes there will be more of them along with more spearfish.

There have been several questions about spearfish asked in the past. They are a fish that frequent these water part of the year and for some reason they will strike a lure or bait while they are here, and this is the only place in the world that they seem to take bait or lure! So people that are interested in catching all the bill-fish come here to catch them. They are a fun fish on small tackle but of course they don't stand much of a chance with large tackle. If you are interested catching them: want to try to set a record or just have the fun, you need to ask me (or your captain) about fishing for spearfish, as we will fish them differently.
We are still catching Ahi with weights up to 200 pounds,as the summer comes we will be catching more of them, also the Mahi-Mahi with them, are weighing around 25 pounds. So, until the next time PLEASE BE SAFE OUT THERE!!!
 Capt. Bob

Picture of spearfish
54 pounds-NICE !!!

Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii: (Fishing Report as of 12-03-2004):

As I mentioned before the fish report will be a little short because of the lack of fishermen,as we should pick up a little in Dec. Weighed Marlin: 547,69,77,293,469,316,96,428,330,265,310,132. Weighed Ahi: 113,160,124,118. We have caught Mahi Mahi and Ono around almost every floater we have found the mahi Mahi
have weighed up to 50 pounds, and the ono up to 60 pounds, there are a few Stripe marlin
being caught now but it will get better as we get into the month of Dec.
   Tagged and released fish...

Blue marlin: 50,70,70,40,250,230,100,120,100,60,95,40,110,90,90

Spearfish: 40 pounds.

The largest Mahi mahi was 53 pounds, and there was one boat that caught 20 ono up to 45 pounds.

there are no fish, there are just no fishermen in Oct and Nov.

REMEMBER BE SAFE OUT THERE!!!

Capt.Bob

Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii: (Fishing Report as of 08-24-2004):

Well we will see the report get smaller now as the summer has just about come to the end and we will not have as many people going fishing,it is not that the fish are not here just no one to catch them. Weighed marlin all weights in pounds: 555,586,508,605,505,212,207,295,217,260,222,420,204,178,317,457,367. Ahi(yellow Fin Tuna): 181,94,90,106,50,40,50,207. Tagged and released Marlin: 175,130,150,140,200,130,125,200,175,200,150,200,180,550,300,150,250,150,200,450,170,350,200,150,80,200,200,225,250,275,125,70,70,250,140,150,175,170,150,275,150,200,160,130,150,175,225,180,125,450,130,150,180,300,120. We are also still catching Mahi-Mahi,ono,spearfish and striped marlin. Well that is all I have for now Remember PLEASE BE SAFE OUT THERE!!!

Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii: (Fishing Report as of 06-05-2004):

Aloha from the Big Island, at last we will have another fish report, my web-master has been on vacation in Japan
for the last month, but he is now back and we will to do better job of posting the weekly fishing report(:-)...

The fishing lately has been very good for just about everything. See the photos of the 171 pound yellowtail tuna, the 195 pound broadbill (swordfish), and finally the 595 pound thresher shark (look the the size of its tail).

Weighed Marlin: 916,878,662,722,882,627,623,515,506,566,
and also 452,216,498,425,222,489,493.

Black marlin: 243,171.212,183,338,227,365.

Tagged and released Marlin: 450,200,300,200,400,120,175,200,400,150,140,
175,110,150,225,140,275,250,180,500,120,325,150,300,490,150,300,150,475,220.

There has been lot’s action if you find a floater several boats have caught enough Mahi-Mahi and ono that the angler was to tired to continue generally when you find a floater and here has been no other boats there you will hook up with four or five of them at a pass, since these fish will average 25 to 30 pounds it adds up pretty fast, one of the boats caught 26 Mahi-Mahi and 9 ono.

The Captains on some of the boats are starting to fish nights for Ahi now and broadbill (swordfish) they have been doing well but that report will be next, if any of you are coming over soon you might want to try that e-mail me for information believe me it’s a blast. You haven’t forgotten have you, please remember to BE SAFE OUT THERE!!!

Aloha From Kona (Fishing Report as of April 14, 2004): Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii:Here is the fish report for this week......We have had a couple of "interesting things" happen to us since the last report. First I hoping to send along a picture of a 707 pound Blue marlin that ate one of the spearfish that we catch here.
Tthe Spearfish weighed 34 pounds after it was taken from the stomach of the marlin.

Last week, just in front of the harbor entrance, a marlin was hooked at 9-AM the following morning at 3-AM (that's 18 hours later) they finally broke the line. The fish was up to the boat three times, but could not be brought close enough to gaff in it; and the fish pulled them 54 miles almost to Maui. The angler was 80 years old and stayed with the fish the entire time up until about 30 minutes before the line parted at which time they had set the rod into a rod holder so that he could go downstairs to the head. And, apparently the fish took a run and parted the line. And so it goes, the big one almost always gets away.

Weighed marlin: 530,506,549,690,797,731,622,779,764,795,707,544,536,514,406,319,423,424,416
321,262,464,295,325,220.

There were also several Stripe marlin caught along with mahi-mahi,and ono.
There was no one looking for the Ahi, because when the marlin are here, the people only want to fish for them(:-).

Well that's it from here .

PLEASE REMEMBER ,,,,,,,,BE SAFE OUT THERE!!!
Capt.Bob

Aloha From Kona (Fishing Report as of April 3, 2004): Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii:Weighed Blue Marlin: 605,677,563,556,538,591,574,220,313,458,288,207,300,271,215,334,275,412,281,266.Also 34 Mahi- Mahi from 20 to 35 pounds.
One ahi 126 pounds; several Stripe marlin up to 111 pounds; and the Ono up to 51 pounds.

Tagged & Released Blue Marlin: 500,450,550,500,300,350.

These are some really nice fish I personally thank the anglers for releasing these fish,,,,,
Yes, I said anglers here, it is up to you "the angler" to kill or release these magnificent wild animals.

We also tagged several Spearfish, Stripe marlin .

That’s it for now, thanks for reading the fish report it may not be good but it’s the truth.

REMEMBER, be safe out there!!!

There were several striped marlin caught, but that season is winding down and
the "Blues" will completely take over the spotlight very soon.We caught Ahi up to 190 pounds but the average was around 140 pounds;
also there are still lots of Mahi-Mahi around weighing up to 25 pounds out there, and these are a "schooling fish".

The weather here has beat us up again, with strong winds and high surf has kept the boats off the water.
We have not lost this many days in years. And, we don’t normally lose over one day at a time,
but this last weather front kept the boats in for four days.

Well that’s it for now.

REMEMBER, be SAFE out there!!!

but we will see.Yes we are still catching Stripe marlin and Spearfish but not nearly as many, the Ono fishing has been really good and there was one boat that got into the Ahi the other day 114,96,140,102 I would think that fisherman was pretty tired. Well, that's it from here. I guess I could try to dazzle you with B.S., but I just tell it the way it is(:-).Until next time remember please BE SAFE OUT THERE.Capt. BobAloha From Kona (Fishing Report as of April 23, 2003):
Aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii!Every week I ask you to please be careful out there, and here is one of the reasons that I ask.About three miles off shore there was a large amount of splashing and it was noticed by a researcher. It appeared
to be false killer whales (actually Dolphins) attacking a Pacific Blue Marlin that was estimated to be between 10 and 15 feet
long. The researcher jumped into the water to film the attack but little did he know that he was SOON to be the victim.
The marlin turned on him and drove it's bill into his lower shoulder and chest! The researcher he was finally rescued by
his wife and taken to the hospital, where they repaired a 5-6 inch wide gash. We have Captains and crew hurt here several times a year with the marlin action, so again I ask you
PLEASE BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!I have a new toll free telephone number if you would like to call me
about questions or booking a charter. 1-866-322-7815.And finally, the fish report.Blue Marlin: 712,668,519,594,427,295,337, 344,486,422,234,210,265,450,351,245,461, and 146.
The 146 was caught by a 7-year-old boy and it was his first marlin, and a lifetime memory!.The stripe marlins are still here, with the largest last week weighing in at 171 pounds. Also, the ahi are still around, and the largest last week was 155 pounds. Here are the fish that were tagged and released: Blue Marlin: 125,500,150,150,150,85.Also, several spearfish and striped marlin were released.Capt. Bob

Aloha From Kona (Fishing Report as of April 8, 2003):

There is no way to predict what might happen until the water decides if it’s going to be warm or cold.
Half the previous was good fishing other ½ was horrible. This last week-end there were three different groups
of boats fishing (me included). I would guess that there were about 40 boats,,,,,,,,,,,there was only one marlin caught,
a nice one but only one marlin…

We will start with the tagged and released Blue Marlin: 525,725,700,140,225,and 225. As I said the first ½ was good.

Weighed Blue Marlin: 658,524,479,364,480,454.

There were also the usual stripe marlin and spearfish caught this week,
but those numbers are going down as the Blue bite picks up.

Remember please be safe out there!

Capt. Bob
Aloha From Kona (Fishing Report as of March 31, 2003):The fishing has gotten a little better for the Blue Marlin and a little worse for the Stripe Marlin and the Spearfish...
it's this way every year and will take a little time for the water temperature to become warmer and stay that way
(for the Blue Marlin fishing to get really stable). I had some photos to show you, BUT they were from the newspaper, and not very sharp.
So just image you standing on the dock, weighing in some the fish in this report.
Weighed Blue Marlin: 865,704,618,480,435,387,298,279.
Tagged Stripe Marlin:
The Stripe marlin are bigger but fewer of them: 153 (the seasons biggest so far) 100,100,90,85,65,30,30,30.
Tagged Blue Marlin: 140,450.
Tagged Spearfish: 45,45,45,40,40,40,40,35,30,30.
I expect the fish report to be on the smaller side if the visitors are afraid to fly here but we will have to wait and see.

And remember, please be careful out there!
Capt. BobAloha From Kona (Fishing Report as of March 27, 2003):

The fish report this week is shorter than last week, but there seems to be more Blue Marlin action.
A
couple of nice marlin came in last week at 573 & 580 pounds. Also the Black Marlin were here (or at least the small ones)
at 142 & 110 pounds. For those of you out there that can’t tell the difference between the blacks and the blues,
just remember that the "pec fins" on the black won’t fold back.

There were 23 Stripe Marlin caught last week, with the largest at 114 pounds.

There were 9 spearfish caught last week,
but remember this is one of the few places in the world that they can be caught.

There was a 137.5-pound Ulua caught last week (Giant Jack) that broke the record here
that lasted 60 years. It was broken by a mere 0.5 pound!

Even yours truly got to go fishing for a couple of hours (yesterday).
I caught one Ono and lost a striped marlin,,,,,,,,looks like anyone can do it .

Please be safe out there!

Capt. Bob
Aloha From Kona (Fishing Report as of March 20, 2003):Here we go with another fish report, there are still a lot of stripes, spearfish and ahi around,
but not to many blue marlins, as the water is still on the chilly side.

This last week we have tagged and released 46 Stripe Marlin, the heaviest weighed about 120 pounds.

There were 12 spearfish caught with weights up to 55 pounds.

Also, seven Ahi weighing up to 130 pounds.

Blue Marlin 445, 289,275,335, and 300 pounds.

Until next time ... REMEMBER.

Capt. Bob
Aloha From Kona (Fishing Report as of March 12, 2003):
Tagged and Released Striped Marlin: 29 fish with weights from 30 pounds to 120 pounds

Tagged and released Spearfish: 7 Spearfish 30 pounds to 50 pounds
(and one of them, a thirty-pounder, was caught on a fly rod!)

There was only one blue marlin tagged and released this week it weighed approximately 350 pounds.

Notable catches of the week were blue marlin 563.5 pounds, striped marlin 117 pounds, blue marlin 295.5, and
of course the mix of Mahi Mahi and Ono along with shark.

The water has been cold here and I don’t except to see a large number of Blue Marlin caught until it gets back to normal, as we live in the middle of the Pacific this could be today or next month who knows.

Until next time, PLEASE BE SAVE OUT THERE.

Capt. Bob
Aloha From Kona (March 6, 2003):

No, I have not forgotten you and the fish report; it is only that we have been catching
a lot of spearfish and Stripped Marlin and it is very boring to just put down numbers and no details.

Here is what our boats have done since the last report:

Tagged and Released Fish:
72 stripe marlin with weights from 30 pounds to 100 pounds, they are a fun fish catch as they are in the air a lot.

26 Spearfish from 30 pound to 50 pounds.

Blue Marlin: 90,50,125,40.

Weighed Fish:
Blue Marlin: 232,518 , 605, 425.

Two potential world record Spearfish were caught on fly rod:
32- pound Spearfish on 8Lb Tippet.
37.5 pound Spearfish caught on a 12-pound tippet.

1 large ono 69 pounds

Ahi: 90,110,136,159,118,62,70,20.

Looks like that it is it for now.

REMEMBER BE SAFE OUT THERE!Capt. Bob
Aloha From Kona (February 13, 2003):It is another week with very few weighed fish.
However, We have a new world record, a 43.5-pound Spearfish caught on 16-pound test line!

8 mahi-mahi up to 20 pounds; 1 Ono 15 pounds, and 15 small Ahi up to 25 pounds all caught on one boat.

One Blue Marlin 328 pounds

There were 29 Stripe Marlin caught and released this week with weights up to 65 pounds.

There were 10 Spearfish caught with weights up to 45 pounds.

Remember we only talk about our boats these fish were all caught by 11 boats,
I have no idea how many fish were really caught this last week.

The Blue Marlin should be back on the page in the next couple of weeks, we will just have to wait and see.

Until then PLEASE BE SAFE OUT THERE.

Capt. Bob
Aloha From Kona (February 7, 2003):

As some of you are probably aware, we have had some very high surf here lately. Some of it on Oahu as large as 35 foot, but
by the time it gets here, it is smaller but still to rough to get out of the harbor. Below is the fish report for the few boats that
made it out, there are plenty of stripe marlin, spearfish and Mahi Mahi out there. That is all that’s being caught now, so
it will be a very short fish report.

These were only three fish weighed in this week.

Two Mahi Mahi 43 & 18 pounds

One-stripe marlin 94 pounds

There were 16 Stripe Marlin tagged and released: the smallest about 30 pounds and the largest 70 pounds.

There were 10 Spearfish tagged and released: the smallest 25 pounds and the largest 45 pounds.

There were no Pacific Blue Marlin caught, nor were there any Ahi caught.

I have had almost as many cancellations as they caught fish, it’s hell we finally get some people here that want to fish and
here comes the bad weather. Oh well my heart was working this morning when I woke up so I guess it don’t get any
better than that, besides no one will care in a hundred years anyway.

Remember please be safe out there.

Capt. Bob

Aloha From the Big Island of Hawaii.
Here we go with another fish report for week ending January 20, 2003! We have had a lot of very large surf this last week and the boats are having trouble getting through the jaws of the harbor,

But they were brought straight to the dock and cut up (more eaters).Well until next week providing there are any visitors left to fish we will have another fish report.REMEMBER PLEASE BE SAFE OUT THERE!Capt. Bob
Aloha and Merry Christmas ! ! !

I know, I haven’t published a fish report in quite a while, as there just has not been that much to report.
I did receive an e-mail from a reader telling me that he was going to look somewhere else,,,,,,,,,,,,,okay up to you,
but I will not report something that is not true just for the hell of it .Here is a quick summary of 2002. We have boated 131 Blue Marlin so far this year that weighed more than 500 pounds,
of these 104 that weighed more than 550; 73 weighed over 600 pounds; 34 over 700 pounds;
10 over 800 pounds; 4 over 900 pounds; and 2 over 1,000 pounds. And, we released at least 20 that
were estimated at 500 pound. We will not even start to talk about the fish that were smaller than 500 pounds,
but if you have been following the report you know that there were a lot of them.

We are seeing a few more people now that Christmas and New Years is here. I will report what happened last week
and will continue as long as the people are fishing. NOTE: the "fish are always here", just not always someone to "catch'em".

So, here we go...the largest marlin last week was 808 pounds!
Other weighed fish: Blue marlin 395, 299; Ahi 110, 83, 105, 171, and a Spearfish 55.

Tagged And Released Fish: Blue Marlin 50; Striped Marlin 25; Spearfish 40, 30, and 30.

That’s it for now, and PLEASE REMEMBER TO BE SAFE OUT THERE.

Capt. Bob

Fishing Report for period ending: OCTOBER 7, 2002

Well I have been to Las Vegas and left my donation.

Here is the fishing report, and not one that I’m really proud of... but that is the way it happened last week.

Weighed Marlin: 559,151,177,420,120,155,227,146,199,290 and 173.

Also so some tuna.,
Yellow fin: 151,177,110 174, And 23 Albacore were caught on one boat, with weights that ranged from 30 to 60 pounds.

There has also been a couple of sailfish caught, so that tells me that the striped marlin are just around the corner.
We should see plenty of them and the spearfish in the near future. I just hope that we start getting a few fishermen
on the Island so the fish report will look better than this one.

Aloha from here, and please remember to be safe out there!

Fishing Report for period ending: SEPTEMBER 17, 2002Aloha,

Still not a lot to report as there are not many boats leaving the harbor, but we will try. Also, there will not
be a fish report for next week, as I will be going off island until the 30th of the month.

Weighed Marlin: 589,359,381,468.

Tagged and released Marlin: 170,160,700,260,150,100,150,250,495,225..

That’s it for this week, and remember BE SAFE OUT THERE!!!

Capt. Bob
Fishing Report for period ending: SEPTEMBER 10, 2002 Well here is the true proof that there are not many visitors here at this time of the year

One weighed Marlin: 365 pounds

Tagged and released Marlin: 125,300,150,110,200,165,140,260,280,250, and 500.

It is as slow as I have ever seen it maybe it is because of the Sept 11th thing,
I don’t know what the reason is ... all I know is if the visitors are not here we can’t report much of a fish report.

Capt. Bob

Fishing Report for period ending: SEPTEMBER 3, 2002Here is the weekly fish report, there were a lot of tagged fish this week for the amount of anglers still here,
one of the anglers has now released two fish this season that were estimated at 700 pounds plus,
but first we will do the fish that were weighed.

Weighed Marlin: 641,533,537,369,474,322.

Tagged and released Marlin: 160,180,450,500,180,120,175,220,200,160,700,200,175,325,175,150,180,250,125,500.

We caught some Ahi (yellow Fin Tuna ) this last week here are some of them: 163,129,159,126,123,105,158,130,119.Most of the Ahi are caught at night. And, the ones we have mentioned here were caught trolling in the daytime.
We had one boat that fished with clients last night they caught four Ahi with weights up to 188 pounds, and
also two albacore tuna.

If there is anyone out there interested, we will in the very near future start a boat fishing offshore.
It will take a party of six maximum, and the boat will do overnighters to an area we call the "seamounts".
It is a 140 mile trip out there (3-day minimum trip), but as you can imagine there is very little boat traffic.
And there are plenty of tuna, which means there are plenty of marlin!!! We are still discussing the price and
will have it on the main web page when we start. The boat is a fifty foot carver with stabilizers and fully air conditioned.

We will also use this boat in our local chartering and do overnighters here closer to shore...maybe do the volcano.
We would fish down there and back, that would also be a two or three day trip.
LET US KNOW IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THIS TYPE OF SPORTFISHING CHARTERS.

I guess that’s it for this week, please remember to BE SAFE OUT THERE!!!

Capt. BobFishing Report for period ending: AUGUST 26, 2002There are still no shortage of fish just a shortage of fishermen
Weighed Pacific Blue Marlin: 955,532,680,719,381,347,496,476,420,325
We also weighed a tiger shark that was 1,006 pounds, this is a rarity, as we don’t normally kill shark here.

Tagged and released Marlin: 150,250,120,140,150,200,160,200,200.

Please note that the weighed fish averaged 533 pounds, these are big fish to anyone’s standard!!!

Here is the last weeks fish report, not a very long one. I’m afraid that the tourist season is over and the fish report will be smaller as
